Chalmers Heathcote Vineyard, Colbinabbin Vic
Chalmers Merbein Vineyard, Merbein Vic
Fiano is a grapegrowers dream. This Campania native produces perfectly balanced fruit with little fuss in the vineyard, is drought tolerant and resistant to disease reducing vineyard application requirements, and naturally high in acid, meaning less intervention required in the winery. It has been the best fruit of the vintage at Chalmers on many occasions, which is quite an achievement when you consider there are about 40 different varieties over the two properties.
The 2010 Chalmers fiano melds delicate stone fruits and almond blossom with savoury lees contact characters and minerality, displaying texture and power in the mouth whilst retaining a fine, fresh finish.
GI: Murray Darling, New South Wales
Food Match: Pan fried Murray Cod with buerre blanc and fresh polenta
2010 Fiano Tasting Notes
Originally from Italy's Campania region, fiano is one of many Italian grapes that have found a happy home in the warm climates of Australia. Loaded with aromas of pear, citrus, blossom and wax, it's a pretty wine to swirl and sniff. Medium-bodied, it has an endearing mineral streak, along with flavours of pear, quince, herbs and fennel seeds. Textural and zippy in the mouth, it has refreshing acidity that also offers a chalky grip. A moreish wine that would be quite versatile at the dinner table.
Ben Thomas, The Weekly Review
This takes fiano to a higher level: it’s a complex, satisfying sipper. An interest-packed fiano.
The winemaker had a red-hot go.
