Sangiovese
Of all the varieties imported by Chalmers in the late 1990s, Sangiovese was the variety that got the most attention. There were 14 different selections of Sangiovese in that shipment, selected from various sites around Tuscany and with quite vastly differing characteristics. After trialling these clones at the original Euston site, and making wines from a good percentage of them, one superior clone was selected for the plantings at Heathcote. Sangiovese was one of the very first wines made by Chalmers and after a period of absence from the range it has returned in the 2011 vintage.
A vibrant brick colour in the glass with a nose of dusty red fruit and sweet black cherry the 2011 Chalmers sangiovese looks every bit the part of a ‘chianti classico’ style. Medium weight with meaty savouriness and herbal notes, the palate shows both sweet and sour cherry with a clean finish of grainy, mouth-coating tannin.
